The Heart Protector, also known as the Pericardium, is considered to be a yin organ in Chinese medicine and its function is closely associated with the Heart. The Heart Protector has its own Qi meridian and is often used to regulate heat. In western medicine the Pericardium is described as the protective outer covering or sac around the heart. This is mirrored in TCM, which sees the Pericardium as protecting the Heart from invasion by external pathogenic factors, such as high fever. The heat, in such an instance, would be contained by the Pericardium, thus protecting the Heart. According to classical Chinese theory, a compromised Heart Protector could reveal symptoms such as palpitations, insomnia, poor concentration, and hot flashes. The Heart Protector also relates to the Heart’s association with the emotion of Joy. In Chinese medicine too little or too much Joy in one’s life is an example of disharmony seen in attitudes of irritability, anxiety, panic, and difficulty with intimacy.
