Arctic Alginate contains a type of brown seaweed known as Ascophyllum Nodosum, commonly referred to as Knotted Wrack. This particular species of kelp grows in the untainted waters of Norwegian fjords, which are created by huge glaciers that erode the bottom of a valley well below sea level. Once the glacier melts, this water combines with the Gulf Stream and mineral mountain waters thus establishing a pristine environment for seaweed to grow. When this particular seaweed is harvested from the fjord it is immediately washed, dried at low temperatures and ground into meal so it maintains its vital nutrients and full integrity. Kelp has been relied on in folk medicine as an excellent nutritive source of minerals and vitamins, especially iodine. For this reason it has been used to support thyroid function by using iodine to produce thyroxine, the iodine-containing thyroid hormone responsible for regulating most physiological functions. Another medicinal component of brown seaweed is the phytochemical fucoxanthin, the pigment giving these seaweeds their color. Recent research has shown fucoxanthin to be useful for weight loss, especially targeting abdominal fat through increasing the activity of uncoupling protein-1, a unique group of closely related proteins involved with thermogenesis. This process appears to keep body fat under control during excessive caloric consumption. One other phytochemical found in abundance in brown seaweeds is called fucoidans. Studies show that fucoidans have immunomodulating properties, increasing the activity of immune cells and demonstrating anti-inflammatory effects on digestive tissue. Lastly, brown seaweeds have been used traditionally as a part of any cleansing program offering fiber to increase fecal bulk. This fiber has been found to be helpful to absorb toxins in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing the risk of poisoning from environmental pollution.
