Calvin Peterson, Navajo artist and silversmith, has created a unique and meaningful pair of post mounted sterling silver overlay earrings for pierced ears highlighted by the 'Man-in-the-Maze' Design. The earring ovals are 3/4" long by 1/2" wide. Calvin has stamped "Sterling" and added a sun/cloud design as well as etched CP on the backs of the earrings. These are earrings that are sure to please!
There is a Pima Indian legend that explains when a person is born into this world, they enter a maze of life. The entrance is at the top where Se-eh-ha (Elder Brother) is waiting to show the way. The legend tells of the dead ends, detours and obstacles. It’s the struggle to understand what can affect the physical, emotional, and spiritual growth that can guide them through the maze. At each turn, there is an opportunity to understand and appreciate the cycle of life, and to gain strength to move toward their goals. If the path is traveled in harmony and with a balance with nature, the legend says that dreams and ambitions will be found at the center of the maze, where E-e-thoi (Sun God) waits. He then passes them on to the next world. Overlay is created by “sweating”, or soldering, two pieces of silver together. The top piece contains a design element which is meticulously cut out of silver. The bottom piece is oxidized and often textured to produce a contrasting background. They then carefully file, buff and polish to produce the fine finish on their beautiful item.
