Société des Films Historiques (France); 1927; dir: Raymond Bernard; cast: Pierre Blanchar, Charles Dullin, Édith Jéhanne. Vintage original 27 x 40 in. (68.6 x 101.6 cm.) Swedish poster, stone lithograph, unfolded, linen-backed, near mint condition.
Produced in France in 1927 and directed by Raymond Bernard, The Chess Player is an extraordinary silent film which has been meticuously restored by film historian Kevin Brownlow. Like Abel Gance's Napoleon, The Chess Player is an epic set in 1776 Poland and revolves around the people of Poland's revolt against the occupying Russians. This beautiful original release Swedish poster features a large stylized image of the film's lead characters, Boleslas (Pierre Blanchar) and Sophie (Edith Jehanne), portrayed above a scene depicting the revolution that the couple are fighting for. This poster is unfolded and has been professionally linen-backed with no restoration whatsoever, as it was in near-pristine condition when we acquired it.
