Vintage original "Photoplay Edition" book from the first sound version of this highly popular tearjerker starring Ruth Chatterton in the title role. Originally written by J.W. McConaughy from the play of the same name by Alexandre Bisson, this Grosset & Dunlap hardback Photoplay Edition was published upon release of the film and features full-page black-and-white illustrations from MGM film version starring Ruth Chatterton and Lewis Stone. The book is stamped with a seal on the frontspiece which reads Library of Jose R. Martinez and also has a signature from a former owner, Helen M. Hayt, on the same page. This book is in good condition and includes the dust jacket which is protected in a clear plastic cover.

This 1929 MGM production was the third screen version of MADAME X and was the first sound version. The story was filmed two more times, a tribute to its continuing popularity. Ruth Chatterton was nominated for a "Best Actress" Academy Award for her role in this film and Lionel Barrymore received a "Best Director" nomination.
