RKO Radio Pictures; 1933; dir: Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack; cast: Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong, Bruce Cabot, Frank Reicher. Vintage original 11 x 14 in. (27.9 x 35.6 cm.) U.S. lobby card, R-1952, excellent condition. This vintage original lobby card is from RKO's 1952 theatrical reissue of the film, which was one of several theatrical re-releases of this extremely popular and iconic horror film. The image depicts the meeting of adventure filmmaker Carl Denham (Robert Armstrong) and his crew as they encounter the natives, brandishing large wooden shields and spears, on Skull Island. Standing behind Denham are Ann Darrow (Fay Wray) and John Driscoll (Bruce Cabot). The huge wooden wall and gate that the natives built to protect themselves from Kong is seen in the background (this set was later burned to create the famous "Burning of Atlanta" sequence in Gone With the Wind). The large border artwork on the right features a close shot of Kong which appears on one of the two original 3-sheet posters from the film's 1933 release. RKO issued a duotone set of lobby cards for the 1952 theatrical reissue with a blue/green tint. As stated in the lower right corner, this card is number 2 from the set of 8 cards. Measuring 11 x 14 in., this lobby card is in excellent condition with a 7 in. diagonal crease on the top left corner, 2 pinholes in the top left corner, 3 pinholes outside the top right corner, 3 pinholes in the bottom right corner and 4 pinholes in the bottom left corner, a 1/4 in. tear below the center in the right outer white border, small creases and signs of wear at each corner, signs of wear along the top and bottom outer white borders and very small areas of light surface wrinkling. This rare original theatrical lobby card presents itself very well despite these minor flaws.
Original material from King Kong ranks among the most sought after of all of the classic 1930s horror films. Based upon a story by Merian C. Cooper and Edgar Wallace, King Kong was produced by the legendary David O. Selznick and featured state-of-the-art special effects by Willis J. O'Brien.
