CONQUERING POWER, THE (1921)

Item: U.S. 8x10 Still Photograph
SKU: S-CP-002
Price: $20.00

Quantity:

Metro Pictures Corp.; dir: Rex Ingram; cast: Alice Terry, Rudolph Valentino, Ralph Lewis, Edna Demaurey. Vintage 8 x 10 in. (20.3 x 25.4 cm.) U.S. copy still photograph, c.1940's, very fine condition. The image features a long shot of the handsome young playboy, Charles Grandet (Rudolph Valentino), handing a letter to a servant to post for him. The two men are inside a hut in Martinique. Valentino's image in this still photograph is quite different, as he has a more contemporary style of haircut and the stubble on his face adds to this "modern" look. This still photograph was printed most likely in the 1940's or possibly earlier and is in very fine condition. There are several tiny black dots on Valentino's left elbow which appear to have occurred when the still was printed. The film's plot is as follows: Monsieur Grandet, the wealthiest man in his province, forces his wife and daughter, Eugénie, to submit to the regime of mean poverty. Because of her wealth, Eugénie attracts aspiring suitors Cruchot de Bonfons, a minor magistrate, and Alphonse des Grassins, son of a local banker. Grandet's nephew Charles, a wealthy young dandy, arrives from Paris with news of his father's suicide and falls in love with Eugénie, with whom he exchanges vows before leaving for Martinique to repair his fortune. Père Grandet intercepts their letters and locks up Eugénie after learning that she has lent Charles money for his voyage. His mind affected by the death of his wife, Grandet is trapped while contemplating his money and in his efforts to escape is killed by a chest of gold. Eugénie is about to sign a marriage contract with Cruchot when Charles arrives to claim her.
