Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. Promotional Dust Jacket for TARZAN AND THE LION MAN
Edgar Rice Burroughs
Published in Tarzana, CA by Burroughs, Inc. in 1934.
This is an original dust jacket. It is not a reproduction. It was printed in 1933 or 1934.
This dust jacket is a promotional dust jacket for the first edition of TARZAN AND THE LION MAN. I suspect most of these that were sent out in 1933-34 to selected bookstores ended up as scrap paper or in the trash can. The Janus head cover illustration is by the great artist John St. John, who illustrated many of Burroughs novels over the years.
The dust jacket is folded neatly in quartos (as this jacket was sent to booksellers that way in 1933-34), not too really noticable as the jacket is in an off-white color predominantly. Also this is something that one would not want to put on a book, but rather display it.
On the reverse of the jacket there is promotional text telling about the forthcoming book and with quotes from reviewers (please see the photo). No chips or other wear present on this jacket. Early promotional dust jackets like this are not common. Most were just discarded by the receivers and reviewers. A great item to have. From my collection. This is a low price for this rare item.
NOTE: On the last photo of the close-up, the words "EBAY PHOTO" are NOT on the jacket. This was added to the photo when the listing was on eBay.
Thank you, Phantom Bookshop.
