Saint Martin de Porres Hand-carved wooden sculpture Here we have a beautiful hand-carved wooden sculpture, painted, of Saint Martin de Porres.
It is 21-1/4" tall and was created in the latter part of the century. It was probably made in South America.
There are a few things that are interesting about this sculpture. First it is fairly rare to show this saint as a child. Also there are glass eyes in the sculpture and the eyelashes are made from human hair.
Overall in very good condition. There are some joining cracks, as shown. This is normal with sculptures made from sectioned wood and where they are joined together. Please view the photographs.
Some information on the Saint: He was a son of a Spanish nobleman and a Black woman. When he was young his mother sent him to work as a helper to a surgeon where he learned to take care of the sick. Later he entered the infirmary as a lay brother. St. Martin also looked after the ill and did any humble task assigned. He effected many cures and also ran a hospital for dogs and cats. He lived a life of simplicity and devotion to all creation. His Feast Day is November 3rd. On May 16, 1967 Pope John XXIII in a ceremony at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome made Martin de Porres the first Black American Saint.
