Ten original drawings by Jules Pascin
Jules Pascin (1885 to 1930). Born as Julius Mordecai Pincas. He was an Expressionistic painter who had an influence on many other major painters of the day such as Kuhn, Kuniyoshi and Weber.
A gifted artist born in Vidin, Bulgaria who is famous for his delicate draftsmanship and most sensitive studies of women.
He was born of Italian Serbian and Spanish Jewish parents and educated in Vienna and Munich. By 1904 his drawings were published in satiric journals. In 1905 he began to sign his name as "Pascin" and arrived in Paris to be hailed by the the artist's delegation from Cafe du Dome. His studio was in Montparnasse and later Montmarte. His first solo exhibition was in Berlin in 1907.
Later on he went to London in 1914 and later traveled to New York and meets the collector Hermin David. From 1914 to 1920 he remained in New York. He became an American citizen but did numerous art exhibitions and traveling in other places around the world such as the Caribbean islands and the southern states of the US.
Jules Pascin was a great romantic and Bohemian artist, much like Modigliani who was a friend of his. He became a leading Modernist in Paris amongst his friends at Cafe du Dome. He was also closely associated with musicians and other cultured artists in the 1920's. In 1930 he committed suicide by hanging.
Below are shown ten original drawings by Pascin with dimensions and condition:
Drawing Number One.
Pen on soft medium thickness paper with watercolor washes.
Watermark in lower right in Russian. Tiny chip missing in upper left corner of drawing ( a bit more is missing, scanner bed was smaller than the drawing) and another chip missing along the lower edge left center.
8-1/16" x 11-7/16". Some moderate bleed-through of the ink on verso. Signed in the lower right by Pascin.
Drawing Number Two.
Pencil (graphite) with possibly some Conté crayon in the two dark areas, on soft medium thickness paper with watercolor washes. Paper has been hand cut from some source. 9-7/16" x 11-13/16". This drawing exceeded the size of the scanner, so the edges may not be represented as shown. Signed by Pascin in the lower right. (The scan shown is a bit redder in hue than the drawing and the darks are a bit more intense.)

Drawing Number Three.
Pen on soft medium thickness paper with watercolor washes. Paper has been hand cut from some source. 8-5/8" x 11-3/8". This drawing exceeded the size of the scanner, so the edges may not be represented as shown. Slight chip to upper right corner, minor. No signature is noted. There is some "bleed through" of the pen on the verso.

Drawing Number Four.
Pen on a rather thick watercolor or textured paper with watercolor washes. 11-7/8" x 15-3/4". Signed by Pascin in the lower right of the drawing. This is large drawing and the scanner bed was too small to cover the entire piece, so some of the edges are not shown. One back of this piece there is preliminary drawing of a nude. Shown below, under this scan.

VERSO of the above piece:

Drawing Number Five.
Pen on a thin, smooth paper with watercolor washes. 5-5/8" x 7-3/4". Signed nicely by Pascin in the lower right of the drawing. A wonderfully executed drawing, each line is clean and bold and final. The paper was cut out of a spiral notebook apparently as the bottom edge gives indication of this. This image is shown a bit larger than the original.

DETAIL of the above piece:
Drawing Number Six.
Pen on medium thick somewhat smooth paper with watercolor washes. 6" x 8.69". Six minute perforation holes? along top edge. Four minute perforation holes? along left edge and one minute perforation hole in lower right corner. Beautifully done piece of artwork.
Signed nicely by Pascin in the lower right of the drawing.

More DETAIL and SIGNATURE from number six:
Drawing Number Seven.
Pencil (graphite) on thick somewhat paper with watercolor washes. 7" x 8.75". This piece of heavy stock has a bit of dampstain along the the lower bottom edge. There is a light pencil sketch, or beginning of one, on the verso. It looks like a garden plan or lattice.
Signed by Pascin in the lower right of the drawing.

Drawing Number Eight.
Pen on medium smooth paper with watercolor washes. 9" x 12-3/16"". Nine minute perforation holes? along right edge. Twelve minute perforation holes? along left edge. You can see these on the artwork. I have no idea what they are. They are smaller than pin-holes. Maybe where the piece was lain on some sand or rough surface at some time. Beautifully done piece of artwork. Signed nicely by Pascin in the lower right of the drawing.

Drawing Number Nine.
Pen on medium smooth paper with watercolor washes. 9" x 12-3/16"". Eleven minute perforation holes? along right edge. Eleven minute perforation holes? along left edge. You can see these on the artwork. I have no idea what they are. They are smaller than pin-holes. Maybe where the piece was lain on some sand or rough surface at some time. Beautifully done piece of artwork. Signed nicely by Pascin in the lower right of the drawing.
