Katherine Dunham oil portrait by Werner Philipp

Katherine Dunham oil portrait by Werner Philipp
SKU:

Sorry, this fine painting has been sold.

This is a stunning large oil painting on canvas done by Werner Philipp in 1943, signed by him as shown. The frame size is 55" x 45" and the oil painting is approximately 39-1/2" x 50". The painting is in excellent condition. There is a small pin hole (shown in the third photo) in the canvas to the right of her head, as shown. Very minor. A beautiful and striking painting.

Katherine Dunham was a dancer, choreographer and originator of the Dunham Technique of Modern Dance. She was the first woman to get a PhD. from the University of Washington in the 1930's. She went to Jamaica to study native dance moves and incorporated them into her technique, which was provocative for hte times, but had a lasting effect on modern dance.
