Prince Valiant
original ink drawings
Hal Foster-John Cullen Murphy
Here we have original ink drawings with pasted dialog from "Prince Valiant" from 1973. The drawings are top quality as shown. I tried to show the detail without reflections from the glass. The original appears sharper though. The "Prince Valiant" strip was launced in 1937 by Hal Foster, and is considered the most detailed work ever done in "comic" form for a newspaper. In 1970, Foster turned the drawing of "Prince Valiant" over to John Cullen Murphy, while continuing to write the continuities. Foster retired officially in 1979.
The piece is framed and has slipped a bit from the mat, as shown, so should be re-hinged by a capable frame shop. The pasted dialog strips are lifting on some of the edges, as shown in the photos. Overall, a great piece to have. The overall size including the frame is 22" x 31". The approximate size of the illustration board is 25" x 12" as some of it is under the mat board. I have shown the 1973 date of the publication in a close up.
