A Christmas Carol
Charles Dickens
Published in London by Chapman & Hall in 1843. 166 pages, no ad's are present. The book has been rebound long ago in three quarter leather over brown cloth.
First edition of "A Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being a Ghost Story of Christmas."
With Illustrations by John Leech. London: Chapman & Hall, 1843. First edition, "Stave I" as the first chapter heading, red and blue title-page dated 1843, blue half-title.
Small octavo in size. Four hand-colored steel-engraved plates (frontispiece and facing pages 25, 78, and 150 by and after John Leech and four wood-engraved text illustrations (on pages 37, 73, 119, and 164) by W.J. Linton after John Leech.
The book has been rebound long ago. Some of the first few pages and front cover are disbound. The rear cover is disbound. The book needs to be rebound and is an excellent candidate.
First edition first or second issue with 'Stave I' on contents page.
The book has had its endpapers replaced long ago. The second state had green-coated endpapers, the first state had yellow -- so, it is impossible to tell whether this is a first or second issue.
The interior pages are very good as well as the illustrations. The title page hand-colored illustration has fraying along the edges not affecting the image. There is a 1844 date and name written in the upper right hand corner of the half-title page. The half title page is printed in blue ink.
