H. Rider Haggard
London: Hurst and Blackett, Publisher, 1884. Octavo, three volumes.
Rare set of Sir Henry Rider Haggard's first novel published in an edition of only 500 copies.
These books were bound by Sangorski and Sutcliff of London in quarter morocco leather with gilt stamped spines. The endpapers have been renewed by the bindery. All the points of first edition issue are present but lacking the ads and 16-page undated publisher's catalogue inserted at the rear of volume three. First edition. 500 copies printed. This is one of the great Haggard rarities and certainly not many of these Victorian triple deckers could have possibly survived. The set is in fine condition with nice interior pages and top page edges gilt.
Totally wonderful by one of the world's superb authors and inspiration for the lost race romance novels and the inspiration for such novelists as Edgar Rice Burroughs and others.
