L. Frank Baum
DOT AND TOT OF MERRYLAND
inscribed first edition
The George M.Hill first edition, published in 1901.
The Phantom Bookshop Museum is open again. Here is another inscribed Baum book for thy consideration, or just to look at. We will be offering signed material one item at a time. It is fun to look at, and fun to have listed for a while.
The book is very good, as shown with come light cover soil. Usually the book shows up in a much more darkened and frayed condition. This one is pretty nice looking. The spine printing is above the average with no rubbing. The gold ink (crown, hair and box) on the front cover is nice. Back hinge is totally cracked through, binding of signatures is a bit loose, interior is nice. The owner(s)owner took care of the book. Illustrated by W. W. Denslow, who illustrated the first edition of "THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ." This book was to be a sort of companion book to that one, published by the same publisher. Not to be. The story is charming and anemic, but had none of the impact and plot that "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" had, illogical and strange as it was. Personally, I liked "Dot and Tot" better as a book.
The book is inscribed on the second blank page by Baum and dated in Macatawa 1904.
Here is the inscription:
'I am writing my name here to prove my friendship for Adelaide M. Godfrey + We have been chums for years, and I hope we shall be chums for years to come. L. Frank Baum. Macatawa 1904.'
