MINIATURE PAINTINGS
Apparently the work of Augustine Edouart
(see explanation on reverse of the first circular
miniature painting)
1. Miniature Painting One.
Framed miniature painting on ivory, frame size is 10-1/2" x 10-1/2"
image size is approximately 3-1/4' in diameter. There is a clean crack
about 2-1/4" from the boy's head from top to bottom to his collar. The plane is
linear, and this crack could be restored by a professional. The old glass is
See the information on the reverse of this painting. It holds the key to the miniature paintings.
2. Miniature Painting Two.
Framed miniature painting in Rembrandt style of what looks like a Dutch Cavalier. Painted on ivory. There are three small bends, or cracks in the piece as shown.
They lie in different planes, so this would take a professional
restorer to bring it back to perfection. Fortunately, none of the cracks go across the facial detail.
Please take a close look at the detail. Amazingly done. The size is almost exactly the same as the third miniature painting.
The frame is gold with a gold painted mat, and measures 6-1/4" by 7-1/4" and the image is slightly larger than 3-1/4" by 4-1/4".
Despite the flaw, take a look at the detail on this painting. Incredible. Done by the hand of a true master, and could proudly be hung in any museum in the world.
I did not notice any signature on the piece.
3. Miniature Painting Three.
Framed miniature ivory painting of a woman. Again an incredible piece. This one is in very good condition, as shown. By the hand of a master.
The details show this very clearly. The size of the frame is 7-1/4" x 6-1/2" with a hand-painted gold mat. The image size is slightly larger than 3-3/8" x 4-1/4".
Please see the photographs. They do not do it justice. Incredible detail. No visible signature of the artist. The verso is black paper over wood,
covered in black tape. Again, this has to be removed and backed by a framer.

OTHER MATERIAL
All of it is laid loose, between two white Styrofoam folders and will be shipped this way to the buyer.
4. Portrait of a lady, in charcoal, apparently. It is so good it looks like a photograph. It is mounted on board.
I have put a 13" ruler next to each piece in the photos for scale. The size is 19-1/2" x 24-1/2" in size. No visible signature.
In the corners, the artist has experimented with little technique drawings, etc. as you can see.
An incredible piece.
5. Portrait of a man in a hat. Done apparently in black and white gauche and water color. A small old photo of the
man is clipped to the upper right, which is removable. I have left everything as is. The buyer can do as he
or she wishes. This piece has been mounted on board long ago. It measures 19-1/2" x 28-1/2" while the little photo
measures 4-1/8" by 2-1/2". Expertly done.
6. A painting done in gauche and/or with water color of an older women. Two photos are clipped (removable to the
top edge). The painting measures 25" x 18-1/2" and the photos measure 6-1/2" x 4-1/4" respectively. It must
have been in an oval frame or mat at one time. Please see the photo. Very well done. No visible signature of the
artist.
7. Painting of a bearded man done in gauche with water color. Mounted on board long ago. It measures
24-1/2" x 19-3/4" and is masterfully done as you can see. On the verso of this piece is written Alexander Edouart.
Please see the photo. No signature was evident.
8. A water color portrait of a seated woman. Mounted on board long ago. It measures 24" x 19-3/4". You can
see where the artist was matching colors along the right outer side of the this cut-out oval. Charming.
This piece is beautifully done, as can be seen in the photos. No signature of the artist is evident. A small 11" x 14"
old photograph of the woman is also present with her name on the back "Melodele Fracort Edouart"
9. Painting in water color of a young boy. This measures 27" by 21-3/4" and is mounted on board. Very well done
and you can see where the artist mixed his colors along the lower bottom edge. In very good condition, bright.
No artist's signature visible. An oval mat or frame comes with this as shown in the photo.
10. Old photograph of a seated woman, faded a bit. Mounted on board with worn corners as shown. It measures
18-1/4" x 11-3/4" and on the verso has a sticker affixed and the name of Bernie Kinsey.
11. Old photograph of a house. Very interesting. Mounted on board and measures 17-5/8" by 14-1/8" and is
in very good condition. I did a close up of the people. The original is much sharper.
12. Old photo of people on horses. A bit faded. Mounted on board. It measures 12-5/8" by 9-1/4" . On
the verso of this photo, in pencil it says " Return to Alexander Edouart, 953 Lucile Ave., Los Angeles, CA"
In the upper left it says: "This photograph of the Mendocino Hunting Party of 1857 was painted by Alexander
Edouart and was reproduced in Visher's Pictorial California (San Francisco, 1870). That reproduction shows the
names of the persons in the painting." "Returned with the thanks of: Fred R. Rogers Col. U.S. Army, retired, 259
Cambridge Ave., Berkeley 8, Calif."
13. Landscape photograph, mounted. It measures 10-3/4" by 8". It has a slight crease in the lower left corner.
On the verso is says: "Painted for Lieut. Horatio Gibson by Alexander Edouart in 1858."
