VERY RARE!!!! An early book on the making of fireworks!
Book Description: Printed For J. Millan, Near Whitehall, London, 1766. Full-Leather. Book Condition: Very Good. Engravings (illustrator). Seond Edition. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 262 pages bound in full leather with raised spine bands. Two blank leaves in the front, one blank leaf in the rear. Spine title and bands stamped in gilt. A bit of foxing to the hand-made paper, but not bad. An important early treatise on fireworks, and the first edition of this book published in 1765 was the first book dealing with fireworks since Babington's classic book on the subject, printed in 1635.
There are 8 fold-out engraved plates, the last plate has a closed 2-1/4" tear. The 16 page subscriber list is present before Chapter One. Errata Page is present preceding the Dedication Page. There are about 100 principle copper plate engravings and this second edition is improved over the first edition with the addition of new fire-works and 3 large copper plate fold-outs.
Contents include Amber-lights, Balloons, Crackers, Cones Fountains, Mortars, Rain0Falls, Sea-Lights Silver-Rain Stars, Swans, Tourbillions Water Fire-Works and Yew Trees. Very rare early and very important book of fireworks.
To encounter this book in such nice condition is very rare. Second Edition.
