Description: At the time of its release, this film was regarded as the biggest disaster in cinema history, a debacle from which director Michael Cimino's career never recovered. The film was badly over budget, a critical and box-office flop, and bankrupted its studio United Artists. Cimino took a revisionist post-Vietnam view of American imperialism. The films failure is blamed for mortally wounding the western epic. In recent years it has been viewed a bit more kindly. It tells the tale (Cimino's version) of Wyoming's Johnson County war.
