Frequently Asked Questions
Why Should I Change my Air Filters?
PHYSICIANS & SCIENTISTS TELL US THAT INDOOR AIR POLLUTION IS AMONG THE TOP 5 ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS IN THE WORLD!
The average person spends up to 90% of their time indoors, be it at home, in school, or at work. Under normal conditions, indoor air contains two-five times more harmful particles than outdoor air simply because the use of synthetic materials and chemical cleaner products can raise the level of indoor pollutants to over 100 times greater than those found outdoors. At the same time, today’s tight, energy efficient buildings permit less fresh air to enter, thereby permitting the concentration of pollutants to rise dramatically. Sadly, the ones most affected by indoor air pollutants are the young, the elderly, and others most vulnerable to poor effects.
The dust found in homes is a combination of pollen, plant and mold spores, pet dander, lint, and bacteria, as well as other contaminants. There are many health effects associated with breathing in these detrimental particles. They range from irritated eyes to allergic reactions, to more serious outcomes including decreased lung function and cancer.
A quick and simple way to lessen the particle count in your home is to install high-quality air filters, as well as replace them regularly!
What types of air filters are available?
There are 4 basic types of air filters:
Panel Filters: Are the most common filter installed with HVAC units. These filters do very little to improve indoor air quality, because their main function is to protect the HVAC equipment.
Reusable Filters: Are designed to be cleaned and reused. These filters are also inefficient at capturing small particles and never get totally clean.
Pleated Filters: Are similar to panel filters, except the filter media is pleated to increase the surface area. These filters are more efficient than panel or reusable filters because there is an increased surface area and the filters are entirely clean upon installation.
Filter MD Healthy Filters: Are constructed of 2-4 layers of synthetic fiber filter media of varying densities and heat sealed over a steel frame for support. A tackifier is applied to hold minute particles to the filter media. There is also an overlap outside of the frame which produces a gasket to prevent air bypass. The Filter MD Healthy Filters can be described as a sponge because it loads all throughout the filter not just on the surface.
How do I choose what type filter to use?
Based on our description of the basic types of filters, it can be concluded that the ring panel filter or a pleated filter will give you the best protection from small particles. Each type has its own advantages.
When choosing a filter that is right for you, it is important to remember that every person’s needs and situations are different, and those needs should be the deciding factor when it comes to choosing a filter. When upgrading from the basic throwaway panel filters to one of our high efficiency air filters, both the Ring Panel Filter and the Pleated Filter offer better indoor air quality. If your top priority is to reduce odors or contaminants, and a high MERV rating is important to you, then consider the Pleated Air Filters in your HVAC System. However, if your priority is higher filter efficiency, better dust holding capacity, reduced storage area, or reduced filter cost, you should select the Ring Panel Air Filter.
What should I do if I can’t find my filter size?
Filter MD can help! We can create a custom frame with filter media, or we can order most of our state-of-the-art filters in custom sizes! Filter MD recommends changing my air filter once a quarter.
What does Filter MD recommend?
Filter MD realizes that every business and home will be different. The type of filter, combined with daily activities in a particular location, determine the frequency of filter replacement. A bakery, for example, will require more frequent filter changes because of the higher amount of airborne particles generated by that type of establishment.
Filter MD recommends a free consultation to get a customized replacement schedule that is right for your home or business. Even new HVAC systems need regular filter replacements. This will ensure your system stays clean and running like new!
