One side has course grit for shaping, and the other side has a finer grit for roughing the tip so chalk will adhere to it. Unscrew it apart to reveal sharp needle like points to "tenderize" the tip to achieve maximum chalk retention. Achieve maximum ball control with a perfectly dressed tip.
