CLOSE-UP with Joe Coyle

CLOSE-UP with Joe Coyle

An 8 week intensive on-camera workshop to prepare the actor for working on a film or television set. In addition to shooting scenes from original scripts, students will also learn industry etiquette and terminology such as 'on the day', 'golden time', and 'magic hour'; how a scene is shot; how to complete industry paperwork; and a who's who on the set.

In the final class, students will apply all they've learned as they shoot a commercial or short film script on location with a film crew!

A film or television set is a world unlike any other and Joe Coyle has been there as an extra, stand-in, principal performer, writer, director, and producer. In fact, you may recognize him from some of his recent commercial appearances: Giant Eagle, Pittsburgh Trib, Roomful Express and Goodyear Tire. Joe will show you how the rubber meets the road while spicing things up with stories from the sets of not only the big-budget shows he's worked on (ER, FRIENDS, OCEANS 11) but also the low-budget/no-budgets as well.

WHO:
- If you are a trained actor over 18 and ready to work, or you ever thought, "I wonder what happens when I get the gig?"

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
- How a film or television scene is shot - master, overs, close-ups, dolly moves, handheld, steadicam - by recording one in each class...just like "on the day" (production term for "when we are shooting").
- The most important thing to remember when going into an audition (besides the lines)
- How a scene is shot - master, coverage, push-ins, dolly moves, hand held, steadicam.
- How the theatre training you have can work for and against you.
- What to do when the Second 2nd (who is that?) tells you to "sign the G" (huh?)
- Terminology - such as what is the difference between 'golden time' and 'magic hour,' and One-Hour Episodic TV and Multi-Camera shows.
- Paperwork - call sheet, boards, start work papers, voucher, sides, storyboards, etc. What to sign and why.
- Crew positions and why you should learn to love the First AC and Second Team as much as the Best Boy and Crafty and the difference between a DP and the AD.

THINGS YOU WILL GET:
- Chance to read TV, film, and commercial scripts each week on camera.
- Playback and critique of your performance.
- Visits from writers, directors, producers, and/or crew members who have worked with Joe; and Donna Belajac will attend one of the classes.
- An edited version of your scene on DVD (for a nominal fee). With all the attention Pittsburgh has been receiving from the major studios and independent production companies, don't get caught unprepared for your CLOSE-UP!

WHEN:
- OFFERED AGAIN IN JANUARY, 2010

WHERE:
- Donna Belajac Casting, 109 Market Street, 4th Floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15222

Testimonials:

"I met Joe before the class was offered and he was very helpful and knowledgeable about the industry. He gave me some good advice. This is a different kind of class. I wasn’t looking to learn the different types of acting and their deep meanings. I just wanted to know more about myself and what I was doing wrong, and the class did that for me...and much more! Reviewing everyone's work at the end of the day was very helpful because I picked up on things that I saw others doing that I was not, and learned what I needed to work on when I saw my own performance. As for Joe Coyle, I have never worked with a guy who will give up “family time” to answer questions and give advice, even after the class has wrapped. He’s got a wife and kids, but he took time out of his life to help a novice actor...and I respect that!" - Eric Wenning

"If you want "in front of the camera" experience, this is it! Why sit in a class, do some role playing, without a camera, and not know what you really look like in front of one? This class shows you what you look like for real! Nothing works better than having a camera in class! "Come to the audition prepared" is Joe Coyle's motto and he really makes you study your lines and be prepared. Then he critiques you and suggests where you can do better: memorizing, posture, overall energy, etc. When I started, I was lucky to be able to memorize one page of dialog. Right after this class was over, I had the confidence to land a film role and I was able to memorize 12 pages of dialog ...and deliver it well...in a short time without any problem! Thanks, Joe!" - William Sewak

"I took Joe Coyle's class after having him as a substitute teacher in a previous acting class. I enjoyed his class so much due to his sensitivity in understanding that everyone was on different levels in their acting profession. His acting classes, while focusing on "getting the job," gave me an understanding that getting the job is only a part of that process. What to do after you land it that mattered. You get one chance to make an impression. His stories of working at his level in the industry gave our class the insight to know what would be expected of us, all the while having so much fun and laughing you didn't know you were learning. It helped to have a great blend of other actors who became a support system to all of us that we still keep. If you are on the fence I suggest taking this class. A lot of us are looking forward to repeating our experience with Joe Coyle."

"The number one thing I took away from the class was letting go and having fun with acting. You really learn a lot when you watch yourself and Joe is for sure there for his students." -Matthew Preston
