The history of the South Carolina Lowcountry is inseparable from that of Carolina Gold Rice, so named because of the color of its husk. Arriving on a ship in 1685 from Madagascar, a bushel of it was given by the captain to Dr. Henry Woodward of Charles Town. From that humble beginning, it expanded to commercial production in hundreds of plantations from North Carolina to Florida. At its height, more than 200,000 acres were devoted to rice production.
