Fair Trade Ndebele Wood Art

BASKET WITH LID

big five

Medium: mpaka

full description

Country:

Zimbabwe

One of our most popular products; we regularly have no stock! Pictu= red is the actual wood basket with matching lid you will receive. Finely carv= ed by hand from a solid piece of indigenous wood, it has a beautiful light reddish brown color and wood grain. The relief comprises the 'Big ‘Five' = with elephant, leopard, rhinoceros= , lion, and Cape buffalo against a background of bushveld trees that also form a canopy for the African wildlife carving. Being hand carved some iThese are the smallest size, of this shape, that we stock. No two baskets, however similar in style, even by the same artist are the same; = they are unique, original works of art. Similar baskets art sell for more than $150 in home décor store. We are able to offer them at modera= te prices by contracting directly with the artisan at fair trade prices. With the most basic of facilities and virtually no utilities to speak of other than raw muscle power and talent, Zimbabweans at several carving co-operatives in the city of Bulawayo and = the Matopos area carve these magni= ficent baskets literally in the African bush in the hot sun.

Peruse and scrutinize the superb artistr= y. Request more photographs by email if needed. The basket is an outstanding example of the styles and designs, so highly prized by these talented Afr= ican artists. Valued by homemakers and collectors worldwide, this wood basket = makes a great gift that anyone would be proud to own.

Décor uses: include ornament, breadbasket, potpourri holder, etc. A delightful addition to any African, abstract art, or ethnic theme and décor at home and the office. = Before too long, you will be in stimulating conversations about the art and your talent as a collector. You can tell them how you found the beautiful bask= et supporting the unemployed and AIDS-impacted communities in Africa at Kwaze-Kwasa [USA] Inc.

Gift: the basket is an interesting and different gift! Suitable for any occasion or celebration and an easy and smart choice for that ‘hard-to-buy for’ or ‘who-has-everything’ person. Print this page to accompany the gift. The recipient will be thrilled to know the gift they received came to them by you generously supporting a good cause.

Care: Long-ter= m care includes bi-annual (more frequent in dry environments) polishing with wood oil or polish (we use Scott’s Liquid Gold). Long-term fine drying cracks = in forced air environments are natural. Should you inadvertently scratch or = chip the basket they are easily repairable and polish back up with a wonderful luster determined by the natural wood grain. Wipe clean with a damp cloth= do not wash in sink or machine.

Ndebele Wood Art: The Ndebele in a broad strip = from Bulawayo in the south to Victoria Falls in the north in eastern Botswana = and western Zimbabwe produce these magnificent wood baskets and many other woodcarvings and sculptures. As beautiful as the Shona Stone Art, woodcarvings and sculptures do not attract the same attention from art critics. We have many home décor and dining accessory products in several wood types from the Ndebele tribal areas of Zimbabwe and Botswana. Our purchases come from Zimbabwe.

Medium (Mpaka): We are told by the artisans that the wood is Rhode= sian Mahogany, locally known as Mpaka. The heartwood is reddish-brown in color and the sapwood is yellow. Texture and grain lend themselves to carving with beautiful results. The wood = type may be botanically incorrect as the locals call different species by the = same name. As our local team learn m= ore, they will supply us with information that is more accurate. Although the carved basket is made from indigenous wood, ma= ny we stock are from renewable exotic wood resources so please read our policy on indigenous wood use and poor communities.
