Country:	South Africa	Very talented Zimbabwean Shona sculptors carved these exquisite African bull elephant plaques. Currently exiled in South Africa where raw stone, their preferred medium, is very expensive they apply their talent to create these original works of art from ironwood. Being hand carved from indigenous wood, no two plaques, however similar, are identical. Carved by ha= nd, in the African bush under the hot sun, with no utilities, some imperfecti= ons maybe expected. These add to the beauty and uniqueness of the product. Pe= ruse and scrutinize the superb artistic talent that the world-renowned Shona c= arve into these fair trade plaques. Each one is an original work of art that y= ou will be proud to own or gift. They sell for more than $100.00 in US home décor stores. We are able to offer them at moderate prices by contracting directly with the artisan at fair trade prices. Detail: includes eyes, trunk, ears, ivory tusks (from cattle bone), skin texture, and folds. Elephants like humans are left or right-handed. The smaller tusk is usually the favored side. As in nature,= the plaque’s tusks are different lengths. The faux ivory tusk inserts are whittled from dried, polished bovine bones. They f= it snugly without glue and are very sharp! For your protection, they are rem= oved and shipped lose. It is our recommendation that the tight fitting tusks be re-inserted, positioned to your liking, and left unglued. They can be rem= oved for the occasional polishing of the plaque. Ironwood: A wide variety of indigenous African trees and shr= ubs of exceptionally hard or dense wood are (commonly) called ironwood. The fine-grained, dense wood polishes to deep reddish brown. Being extremely difficult to work and with its natural beauty and color, carvings and sculptures in the medium are highly prized by collectors. We do not actively encourage the use= of ironwood and try to get the artisans’ to use deciduous renewable woods. Combined with the high cost of deciduous wood and the artists’ joy to wor= k with ironwood it is difficult to persuade them to change. Read our policy on the use of indigenous trees for arts and crafts. Décor uses: The plaques display especially well on lighter col= ored walls and have a pre-drilled hole on the rear for hanging. Some customers= use 3-D box style frames with white or light colored borders that also work v= ery well. Household drills will not penetrate the wood. Likewise, normal nail= s or hooks cannot be attached to the very hard wood. The sculptors kindly pre-drilled a generic anchor post-hole on the back for wall hangings. Use= a hanging anchor (not supplied) that best fits the hole and your needs that= can be securely attached by glue or epoxy. Alternately, glue a tight fitting = dowel or several wood match sticks in the anchor hole into which a nail, anchor= , or hook can be attached. Gift: The plaques without a doubt make an interesting and different gift suitable for any occasion or celebration; a smart choice f= or that ‘hard-to-buy for’ or ‘who-has-everything’ person. In forced air and dry climate enviro= nments, polish at least every six months. Any scratches or minor chips resulting = from use may be sanded (fine paper), if necessary, and re-polished without any problems. With minimal care, the plaque will last a lifetime and many subsequent generations.
