Country:	Zimbabwe	Very talented Zimbabwean Ndebele and Shona artisans carved this exquisite 4”(100mm) long ironwood hippopotamus. Carved by hand,= from indigenous woods, some imperfections maybe expected. These add to the bea= uty and uniqueness of the product. Peruse and scrutinize the superb artistic talent that the world-renowned Zimbabwean artists carve into these hippos= . Each one is = an original work of art that you will be proud to own or gift. The hippopota= mus shows great as decorations. Being hand carved from indigenous wood, no two hippopotami, however similar, are identical. They sell for more than $35.= 00 in US home décor stores. We are able to offer them at moderate prices by contracting directly with the artisan at fair trade prices. Detail: includes tail, mouth, eyes, ears, and nostrils. Ironwood: A wide variety of indigenous African trees and shr= ubs of exceptionally hard or dense wood are (commonly) ca= lled ironwood. The fine-grained, dense wood polishes to deep reddish brown. Be= ing extremely difficult to work and with its natural beauty and color, carvin= gs and sculptures in the medium are highly prized by collectors. We do not actively encourage the use= of ironwood and try to get the artisans’ to use deciduous renewable woods. Combined with the high cost of deciduous wood and the artists’ joy to work with ironwood it is difficult to persuade them to change. Décor uses: The statuettes display especially well against lig= hter colored backgrounds and will enhance any African, hippopotamus, wild anim= al, or mixed décor at home or the office. Care: Polish at least once a year with a good wood oil or polish (we use Scott’s liquid Gold). In forced air and dry climate= environments, polish at least every six months. Any scratches or m= inor chips may be sanded (fine paper), if necessary, and re-polished without a= ny problems. With minimal care, the elephant will last a lifetime and many subsequent generations. With the most basic of facilities and virtually no utilities to speak of other than raw muscle power and talent, Zimbabweans at several carving co-operatives in Bulawayo and surrounding rural areas whittle these magnificent carvings literally in the African bush in the hot sun.<= o:p>
