Fair Trade African Stone Art

TOGETHER FOR LIFE

AKA LOVERS<= o:p>

Medium: Leopard Rock

full description

Country:

Zimbabwe

Shona sculptures impress, stimulate, and inspire.

A 12” tall, hand-carved, signed, abstract leopard rock sculpture by Zimbabwe’s intern= ationally recognized third generation Shona sculptor Tamuka Njanji that he cal= ls ‘TOGETHER FOR LIFE” or ‘Lovers’.

Using machine and hand tools with sand paper to finish the scul= pture represents and celebrates the bond that forms from those inexplicable emotions that lead a couple to a lifetime commitment. The figures are purposely gender neutral portraying any couple in love. Njanji sculptures usually sell on t= he open art market (like his other works) for more than $1500 in USA, Europe= an, and international art galleries. Similar pieces by his peers sold at 2007/08 Denver Botanical Gardens Shona Art exhibit for $2500.00 and upwards (Goog= le Chapungu Gallery). We are able to offer them at moderate prices by contracting directly with the Tamuka and his team at fair trade prices.

Tamuka shows the pureness of the couple’s love by his careful selec= tion of stone that is unusually uniform in color and texture for this rock typ= e. The dominant even yellow color has virtually no spots or streaks of black or = dark green common to this medium that has made it famous for leopard carvings = and sculptures. With the most basi= c of facilities and virtually no utilities to speak of other than raw muscle p= ower and talent, Tamuka scul= pts these magnificent sculptures literally in the African bush in the hot sun= at his “Adagio Gallery.”

The couples’ mutual love expressed by polishing only their faces le= aving the rest of the sculpture au natural with chisel flutings as Tamuka expla= ins that lovers’ faces always have that special glow and must shine. The au natural finish produces subtle shadings that with the natural rock staini= ng leads the viewer to conclude that it is the sculptor’s rendition of the couple’= s clothing. To Tamuka, however, the chisel fluted finish is his interpretation that l= ove can be found anywhere, in any circumstances, especially the current econo= mic meltdown, political unrest, and general raw mayhem in Zimbabwe*. The rawn= ess of life under current conditions in Zimbabwe brutally surrounds and impac= ts everyone and ‘together for life’ is often measured in weeks or months let alone years due to disease and malaise of their impoverished circumstances under a brutal regime.

No two sculptures, however similar in style, even by the same artist are the same; they are unique, original, highly prized collectible works = of art. The sculpture has a notarized Certificate of Authenticity and Valuat= ion. It will rapidly increase in value becoming a treasured family heirloom. <= span style=3D'mso-bidi-font-style:italic'>Peruse and scrutinize the superb abs= tract artistry. Shona Stone Art: Admired by Picasso and many other artists and sculptors, many art critics view Shona stone sculptors to be the worl= d’s greatest rock artists and sculptors of the current era. Some consider them amongst the all time greats, we do! More Shona Stone Art product information.

Many early proponents and current adherents have no formal training in art and produce works that were inspired by their traditions and day-to-day experiences. Not necessarily from one of the many Shona tribes in Zimbabwe and northern Mozambique who predominate as practitioners of the art, some= are from different tribes within Zimbabwe and others from neighboring countri= es throughout the sub-continent. Research shows that Shona Stone art is not strictly a traditional Shona Tribe art that was somehow dormant since the= 15th century but rather a unique contemporary African stone art. Rich in Shona culture and heritage the style shows influences from western art, tourist= and art market demands, current events, and life in general. This does not detract from the artwork as artists ably express in stone their interpretations of life drawing on their natural talent.

The artists’, however, like to say that they broadly follow a basic tenant of= the Shona people that is "live together and the culture will thrive.” Supposedly, the spirits of their ancestors come to them in their dreams, revealing the images that dwell within the rock. After quarrying the rock, with pickax and pry bar, the sculptors’ use handmade and power tools to release the spirits trapped within. Consequently, the artists’ call the carvings ‘fine art’. The style conveys life-like renditions of Zimbabwe’s wild animals. Moses rightly prides himsel= f as an animal carver specializing in fine art leopards, crocodiles, and eleph= ants in the hard stones. He conceptualizes his talent as a gift from and guide= d by his ancestors. He, like many sculptors produce the same styles repetitive= ly once they find their niche. On direct commission from us, he produces man= y of our fine art animal sculptures.

Medium (leopard stone or rock): The stone sculptors of Zimbabwe use different types of rock. Serpentine is overwhelmingly the stone of choice. Leopard stone or rock (not to be confused with leopard skin stone from the Jasper family) found in Ruwa, Zimbabwe is a variant of the quartz family,= a hard yellow/green serpentine characterized by black blotches. On the Mohs hardness scale, leopa= rd stone varies between 6.5 and 7, and consequently a very hard rock, difficult to work and a challenging sculpting medium. It gets its name from the outer looks and colors of the stone. Only the more experienced sculptor will dare sculpt from this hard stone. Carvings and sculptures f= rom this stone will become increasingly more valuable.
