Fair Trade Indigenous African Jewelry

elephant hair

Two (3) Knot Bracelet

full description

Country:

Tanzania and Zimbabwe

The chic, unisex jewelry two-knot bracelet universally worn by men = and women is not only different but also very fashionable. The bracelet adjusts usi= ng ancient knot technology brought to Africa from Asia by Arab traders to fit most regular wrist sizes up to a maximum hand width of 5½” (140mm). The knots represent earth forces, the strands symbolize the yearly season= s. It was believed that one’s ancestors would protect the wearer from harm w= hen wearing the bracelet, due to the forces of the sun and moon, and good and evil being in harmony. Make a donation and receive “good luck” from Africa with the bracelet made for charity that traditionally is worn for protection and as good-luck charms. Nelson Mandela, when president of South Africa, presented one to Pr= ince William during his visit.

Elephants although considered hairless have hairs that protect the = eyes and occur over the whole body. The hair varies from brown to black w= ith rare white or gray and very rare red and green. The very difficult to obt= ain bracelet adjusts using a centuries old sliding knot. The artisans produce a bracelet from five to ten tail hair strands with the thickness = of fishing to weed eater line; C in comparison photograph (A =3D gnu or wild= ebeest and B =3D giraffe) that reach more than three feet (1 m) in length. Two k= nots slide whilst one is fixed. Moving the knots along the strands creates a balance and blend between earth and nature, thus enabling the wearer to b= e in harmony with nature's rhythms. They sell for more than $60.00 in the US; = we are able to offer them at moderate prices by contracting directly with the artisans at fair trade prices.

Gift: the bracelet makes an interesting and different gi= ft suitable for any occasion or celebration; a smart choice for that ‘hard-to-buy for’ or ‘who-has-everything’ person. The bracelet would be a special gift for friends and family. Without a doubt, it makes an excelle= nt gift for young and old alike. For you it will be an attractive piece of j= ewelry and a stimulating conversational piece. Print this page to accompany the gift to the recipient. They will be thrill= ed to know the gift they received came to them by you generously supporting a good cause.

Care: Do not use excessive force to slide knots to maxim= um open position; this can damage the knots or break a strand or two. Wash by hand with normal hair or dog shampoo. Do not machine wash. Apply a drop or two of hair conditioner after washing. Gently open and close to apply conditioner and lubricate all the strands and knots. Wipe off any excess conditioner. Regular applications = of conditioner will maintain the color and give many years of use.

Material (Giraffe Hair): Elepha= nts are protected but not endangered in southern Africa.= NO ANIMAL WAS HURT SPECIFICALLY TO O= BTAIN HAIR; jewelry products only made when legal raw material available and sold as a by-product from licensed professional hunts, authorized culling, and harvesting of molted hair at private or public National Parks Board auctions. The bracelets are imported und= er US Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Import Permit and inspection (on fil= e; copy available on request).
