Medium: vegetation fibers

full description

Country:

Zimbabwe

Tonga women made the 14"Ø tightly weaved, geometry (triangles and circles) pattern basket from the Zambezi Valley, Zimbabwe from natural sustainable vegetation resources. <= /span>Each world-famous basket has its own indivi= dual design, created and expertly hand woven mostly by grandmothers and their female wards to age old, time-honored methods, passed on from the matriar= ch to the younger females in her clan. The patterns used are often symbolic = of local nature and traditional and modern rural life (guinea fowl patterns, lightning, fish, signs of love, etc.).No two basket= s, however similar in style, even by the same artisan, are the same; each on= e is an original, unique work of art

With the most basic of facilities and virtually no utilities, the women and girls apply their talent weaving th= ese magnificent baskets literally in the African bush in the very hot and hum= id Zambezi Valley where winter temperatures rival those of summer in mid-America. Natural fiber from dried i= lala palm leaf (tree only generates from seed that has passed through an elephant’s digestive system) is cut, dried, and prepared for weaving in i= ts natural straw / buff-color or dyed (by boiling roots, berries, leaves, and bark of indigenous flora). Bark and grass fibers are also used in the bas= ket making process. The weavers take great pride in their craft. Besides crea= ting great patterns and designs each basket is well finished with subtle detai= ls like the base (shown in the last picture) to provide stability. You will = be proud to gift or own the basket.

Being handcrafted from natural materials some minor imperfections may be anticipated that add rather than detract = from the beauty of the basket. Similar size baskets sell for more than $70 (Google Africa Direct) in the USA. We are able to offer = them at moderate prices by contracting directly with Binga Weaving Cooperative= and other basket weavers at fair trade prices. Many imita= tion ‘Binga’ baskets are offered on eBay and other online stores that are copi= es made in other parts of Africa, Asia, and China often with inferior materi= als ... beware of words like ‘Zulu’ or South Africa in the description of Bin= ga baskets. Our artisans live and work in the Zambezi valley.

Décor uses: They make great decorations or wall ornaments although the hand woven shallow basket originates from traditional uses for separating grains and as lids for containers. The listing photograph is what you will receive. A delightful addition to any African, basket, or cultural collection or theme and déco= r at home and the office. Visitors will notice and admire your good tas= te in basket selection. Before too long, you will be in stimulating conversations about the artwork and your talent as a decorator or collect= or. You can tell them how you found the beautiful basket supporting the unemployed and AIDS-impacted communities in Africa at Kwaze-Kwasa [USA] I= nc.

Gift: the basket without a doubt makes an excellent gift. Suitable for any occasion or celebration and an easy and smart choice for that ‘hard-to-buy for’ or ‘who-has-everything’ person. Pri= nt this page to accompany the gift. The recipient will be thrilled to kn= ow the gift they received came to them by you generously supporting a good cause.

Weavers: Although better known for stone art many Zimbabwean artisans prod= uce great crafts like the people from the northern Midlands of Zimbabwe. The baskets produced mainly by grandmothers, the backbone of African society,= and young girls in their care. Grandmas play an even greater role in the AIDS pandemic by raising, caring for, and nurturing a generation of orphans (n= ot always family related) and the many ill adults, and are most often the so= le breadwinners. The income from these baskets is often their sole source of income. Through this opportunity to generate income for themselves, the w= omen are able to improve their personal standards of living, e.g. paying school fees, buying food, clothes, and medicine, and starting other projects, su= ch as goat rearing and to raise funds for the grass roots AIDS projects in southern Africa.
